Comic Covers Sunday: Superboy '94

Newer DC fanboys always comment on how Wally West was the only Flash for them.  Same goes for the dude who replaced Hal Jorndan whatever his name was.  All of this is very interesting when you think about it because no one ever complains about the many, many Robins that Batman has had.  Bats just changes'em out and we all go on.  Another character that no one ever seems to care about is Superboy.  For me, Superboy '94 is the only one that counts.

It's not his first appearance but it's a pretty good cover as covers go.  Nothing spectacular but it didn't need to be.

Now this takes guts because over half the cover is black!  It works and creates the proper imagery but it's far from ordinary.

Superboy #50 April 1998

Karl Kesel took over the righting chores and immediately launched into a Supeboy meets Kamandi storyline.  It didn't last long but it was tons of fun and pretty to look at.

If you're gonna riff on Kirby's Kamandi then you may as well go all out and do Omac too.  This was great fluffy fun.

It was a sad day when Superboy's leather jacket got replaced with a t-shirt and tiny shield.  Luckily the shield never stuck and has long since been forgotten.

Although his style isn't really suited for Superheroes, I've always loved this cover from John McCrea.
