One of the things I liked about these covers is that the editors went all out. This is a fantastic parody of... well every Conan cover.

This cover looks like an old Zap! comix cover. I wonder if that's Fat Freddie's Cat? If it were, it would explain the psychedelic colors.

And 30 issues later it looks like it's gone off the tracks. Actually the only reason I picked this was because it was so crazy. I'm curious to see the insides now.

Actually, Usagi Yojimbo first appeared in the story entitled "Usagi Yojimbo" in Albedo Anthropomorphics issue #2 (November 1984), published by Steve Gallacci's Thoughts and Images. Usagi also appeared in Albedo #3 (April 1985) and #4 (July 1985) in the two-part story "Lone Rabbit and Child" before moving to Fantagraphics's Critters anthology. The story "Usagi Yojimbo" was later renamed "The Goblin of Adachigahara" when it was reprinted in Fantagraphics Usagi Yojimbo Summer Special in October 1986.
