Marvel Previews for December

Lee: Somehow this month totally got away from us so Marvel is reduced to one day. I’ll leave it up to Greg to say nice things. I’m making fun of covers and stupid plot points. Yahooo! We’re back to normal.
Greg: Glad to see we're holding ourselves up to the high standards to which our readers have become accustomed.

FEAR ITSELF: THE FEARLESS #4 and #5 (of 12)
Written by Cullen Bunn, Matt Fraction and Christopher Yost
Penciled by Mark Bagley and Paul Pelletier
Cover by Arthur Adams
Guest-starring the Thing and the FF, Namor the Sub-Mariner, the Thunderbolts and more!
The Serpent’s hammers could be the most dangerous artifacts in the world – vfm knows this all too well as she lays siege to the impenetrable headquarters of the FF…where the Thing stands guard over his own hammer of power! Meanwhile Sin and Crossbones pursue the weapons of mass destruction, from the depths of the seas to claim one from the undersea vault of the Sub-Mariner…to the shores of the island prison called the Raft to confront the Thunderbolts!
32 PGS. (each)/ $2.99 (each) NOT FINAL COVER
Lee: yeah, yeah, yeah it’s not the final cover but that doesn’t mean we can’t make fun of it. I used to date a girl who could fit a beer can under her boobs. Yes, it was awesome. But, I never had a girlfriend who could use her boobs to hold up a shotgun. Granted this girl has the slightly unpleasant ripped off face thing going… but she can hold a shotgun without her hands… creepy face… no hands… this would be a lot easier if I knew how well she could aim the gun.
Greg: Now you know, kids. And knowing is half the battle.

DEFENDERS #1
Written by Matt Fraction
Pencils and Cover by Terry Dodson
• Spinning out of the stunning end of Fear Itself! The final Worthy on a global rampage!
• Everyone's favorite Marvel characters banding together to solve a mysterious conspiracy deep at the heart of the Marvel Universe!
• The last line of defense against the forces of the unknown!
32 PGS./ $3.99
Lee: Over all the years and after all the costume changes for every single hero, and new people using the hammer, iron suit, shield, and web spinners… the one constant within the entire Marvel U is Doc Strange’s 70’s stash. That thing is huge. Squirrel Girl got her own one shot, why can’t we have a mini-series “Dr. Strange’s Mustache”?
Greg: That is an awesome stache. If only it was premiering a month earlier, in Movember. All that said, this book has Fraction back writing Iron Fist and that's awesome.

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #632
Written by Kieron Gillen
Penciled by Mitch Breitweiser
Cover by Stephanie Hans
• The stage is set for a deadly new year.
• The most unpopular boy in Asgard receives a certain four-pawed fire-breathing present. What will Loki do with this most unwelcome gift?
• Guest-starring Volstagg!
32 PGS./ $2.99
Lee: So I looked at the cover and I realized that Loki, the ultimate trickster, was burning a box of poop in front of Odin’s door.
Greg: What else would a trickster god do?

WOLVERINE and THE X-MEN #3
Written by Jason Aaron
Pencils and Cover by Chris Bachalo
With the Hellfire Club on the verge of overwhelming the X-Men, the team’s only hope is…Quenton Quire?! The big question is, does he care enough to do anything? Wrap up the first adventure of Wolverine’s branch of the X-tree with Marvel Architect and writer of X-MEN: SCHISM Jason Aaron, and superstar artist Chris Bachalo!  32 PGS./ $3.99
Lee: Wow, give Marvel credit for that cover.  Very, very true... and I really like the little tiny drunk dude on top of the toilet.  Nice easter egg.
Greg: Oh Chris Bachalo, how productive would you be if you weren't drawing little midgets in the margins of all your panels.

CRIMINAL vol. 6: The Last of the Innocent TPB

Obsession, sex, money, and nostalgia for days long past all collide in The Last Of The Innocent.  Riley Richards got it all… The hottest girl in school and a ticket to the big time. Lee: Brubaker writes about Archie whacking Veronica... oh I mean Riley Richards killing his girlfriend.  I cannot wait to get this!
Greg: That is exactly what he is doing here and its even more amazing than you realize. Wait till you get to the completely screwed up Archie parody pages.

Swing along with Spidey during a series of untold gems in which he encounters the likes of the Human Torch, Dr. Octopus, the Vulture, Sandman and more classic characters — along with some new ones like Batwing and Bluebird — on his way to becoming Marvel’s premiere super hero! Collecting AMAZING FANTASY (1995) #16-18; UNTOLD TALES OF SPIDER-MAN #1-25, #-1, ANNUAL 1996-1997 and STRANGE ENCOUNTER; and material from AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL #37.   800 PGS./ $99.99
Lee: This was actually very, very good and one of the best Spiderman series ever.  I wish it were available in something less that $100 hc though.  If you have the money then you should get this.
Greg: I remember this being one of the first critically acclaimed, but mediocre selling books I ever followed. Also, this is a book originally heavily marketed around the fact that each issue cost 99 cents. Now it costs 99 dollars. Ugh.

SPIDER-MAN BY MARK MILLAR ULTIMATE COLLECTION TPB
Written by Mark Millar
Penciled by Terry Dodson and Frank Cho
Cover by Terry Dodson
Peter Parker’s worst nightmare has come true: One of Spider-Man’s enemies has learned his secret identity and is using that knowledge to strike at Peter’s family. Now, his Aunt May has been kidnapped — and his wife, Mary Jane, may be next. Forced into a personal battle against a mysterious foe devious enough to ensnare him in a vicious game of cat-and-mouse, Spider-Man must battle more than a dozen of his deadliest enemies to rescue his aunt. With the clock rapidly ticking down, will Spider-Man earn his greatest triumph or suffer his greatest defeat? In a spellbinding story superbly illustrated by fan-favorite artists Terry Dodson and Frank Cho, best-selling writer Mark Millar presents his definitive take on Marvel’s greatest hero — reinterpreting classic Spider-Man foes such as Dr. Octopus and the Vulture, and introducing an all-new Venom! Collecting MARVEL KNIGHTS SPIDER-MAN #1-12. 304 PGS./ $34.99
Lee:  This is Millar before he went completely haywire with the shock for shocking sake stuff.  But other than that all I remember is the art being fantastic.  So Greg, was the story any good?  Is this worth it?
Greg: This isn't bad, but it isn't great. The art is good and while the writing is pretty lazy, Millar is actually trying to add and build the Marvel Universe. He's not just completely ignoring everything like usual. Good, but probably not worth that price.

PLAQUE: WHEN PLAQUE ATTACKS; and SPIDER-MAN: YOU’RE HIRED!
456 PGS./ $34.99
Lee:  Ok, it appears they got all the good stuff on the cover.  Drugs?  Check.  Alcohol?  Check.  Cigarettes?  Check.  BUT, can you tell what is missing?  That's right, A TOOTHBRUSH.  It clearly states that this reprints Heroes vs. Plaque so where is the toothbrush???
Greg: If you never read Fast Lane, Marvel's mid 90s insert where Spider-Man fights the menance of mari-jah-uana, then your really owe it to yourself to read this. It is completely amazing and terrible and DC's Subway comics don't even come close.

Greg: Well that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Eject enough bile, Lee?
Lee:  Not bad?  I must not be trying hard enough.  Next month will be better... better than what I won't say but better.
