DC Preview Review for June Part 1 of 3

Jim: I’m probably just in a good mood but it looks like DC has some decent comics coming out this month and some big anniversary issues. I guess it really is the Brightest Day for DC.
Lee: Weee fun. Let’s start the post with more bad puns!
Gwen: That wasn't really a pun Lee.

SUPERMAN #700
On sale JUNE 23

Written by J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI, JAMES ROBINSON & DAN JURGENS
Art by EDDY BARROWS, Benard CHANG, DAN JURGENS & J.P. MAYER

DC Comics proudly presents the 700th issue of SUPERMAN, a 56-page extravaganza full of tales celebrating the Man of Steel’s past, present and future! First up is a story by the man who actually killed Superman, Dan Jurgens! Then, James Robinson brings his epic run on the title to a close with a touching story featuring art by Benard Chang that brings Superman back to Earth after his time on New Krypton. Finally, we preview the exciting new SUPERMAN ongoing creative team as J. Michael Straczynski and Eddy Barrows provide a story that sets the stage for an explosive, all-new direction for The Man of Steel! (Seriously! Wait till you read this!)
Jim: Very seldom do I care about a variant cover, but Eduardo Risso doing Superman should be something else. Well JMS comes onto Superman and if history is any gauge he will have some great stories to tell in the beginning of his run.
Lee: JMS always starts well, it’s just his finishes that leave something to be desired. I’m just glad the New Krypton story is over.
Gwen:So JMS is doing Superman and Wonder Woman? Or did I miss a memo here?

BATMAN #700
On sale JUNE 9
56 pg, FC, $4.99 US
Written by GRANT MORRISON
Art by TONY DANIEL, ANDY KUBERT & FRANK QUITELY
Cover by DAVID FINCH
1:25 “DC 75th Anniversary” variant cover by MIKE MIGNOLA
1:75 “DC 75th Anniversary” variant black and white cover by MIKE MIGNOLA
Grant Morrison returns to BATMAN with this oversized special! And he’s brought an all-star roster of artists along with him including Andy Kubert, Tony Daniel and Frank Quitely to celebrate this milestone 700th issue featuring stories spotlighting each of the Batmen from different eras – Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne. You won’t want to miss this blockbuster story that paves the way for the return of Bruce Wayne and sports mind-boggling covers by superstars David Finch (BRIGHTEST DAY) and Mike Mignola (BATMAN: GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT, Hellboy)!
Jim: Of course both of these books aren’t even close to the numbering on Action and Detective Comics. Plus these are legitimate numbering as opposed to Marvel that adds up anything to creatively hit anniversary numbers on their books.
Lee: This book is more interesting because I wonder how Morrison’s run will be perceived in 10 years. Will it still be a classic?
Gwen:I'm still concerned about Bruce coming back. Hopefully Dick can remain under the mask and we can get a new status quo in the Bat books (of a semi-permanent nature).

WONDER WOMAN #600
On sale JUNE 30
56 pg, FC, $4.99 US
Written by J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI, GEOFF JOHNS, GAIL SIMONE & others
Art by GEORGE PÉREZ, PHIL JIMENEZ, JOE MADUREIRA & others
Cover by GEORGE PÉREZ

1:25 “DC 75th Anniversary” variant cover by ADAM HUGHES
1:75 “DC 75th Anniversary” variant black and white cover by ADAM HUGHES
You’re invited to the gala celebration featuring WONDER WOMAN talent from the past and present to commemorate this landmark issue! Renumbered to reflect Wonder Woman’s starring role in 600 issues, this book features the industry’s top talent – including Geoff Johns, Phil Jimenez, George Pérez, Gail Simone, Joe Madureira and more! Plus, readers won’t want to miss a chance to check out the exciting, all-new direction for the Wonder Woman universe as new ongoing writer J. Michael Straczynski (SUPERMAN, BRAVE AND THE BOLD, Amazing Spider-Man) provides a story of his own!
Jim: JMS again and look DC succumbed to the phony numbering scam to get WW to issue #600. WW has brought a lot of writers to their knees (got your mind out of the gutter Lee) and I wonder if JMS can make WW a winner.
Lee: I don’t understand why WW is such a hard character to write successfully. I wish whoever stays more than six issues luck.
Gwen: Ah, I didn't miss that memo after all. Man, are they throwing him right into the heavy hitter or what? By the way, is it me or does Diana's face look off on the cover of this book?

GREEN ARROW #1
On sale JUNE 23
40 pg, FC, $3.99 US
Written by J.T. KRUL
Art by DIOGENES NEVES
Cover by MAURO CASCIOLI
1:25 Variant cover by ETHAN VAN SCIVER
BRIGHTEST DAY shines its light on Star City in this oversized first issue from up-and-coming writer J.T. Krul (BLACKEST NIGHT: TITANS, GREEN ARROW #30) and future superstar artist Diogenes Neves (New Mutants)! “The Fall of Green Arrow” has ended. Now who carries the heavy bow of the Emerald Archer? Coming out of the devastation, what miraculous event has occurred in Star City and what mysteries await inside that bring the forces of good and evil in search of its lone protector? Aim for a whole new era starring Green Arrow in this exciting ongoing series!
Jim: I know the cover makes it look like it could be Ollie, but I bet Roy is now Green Arrow, which is sadly funny as Wally has been demoted and Roy is getting promoted. The future belongs to the next generation people.
Lee: This is what you’ve always wanted… new people wearing the mask. I just wonder if it will succeed given Krul’s limited writing experiences.
Gwen:They should have just let Conner stay Green Arrow. Seriously. But no, they ruined that character *sigh*. Roy was better off as Arsenal so I hope it's not Roy under the mask.

TITANS #24
On sale JUNE 9
32 pg, FC, $2.99 US
Written by ERIC WALLACE
Art and cover by FABRIZIO FIORENTINO

The TITANS ongoing series returns with a new direction that ties into BRIGHTEST DAY! We saw what Deathstroke and his team of mercenaries did in the TITANS: VILLAINS FOR HIRE SPECIAL #1, and it was a dark day for the Justice League of America. Hopefully their next target fares better. Good luck, Lex Luthor!
Jim: Wait the Titans are now a group run by Deathstroke? Shouldn’t they just rename the book as opposed to mudding up the Titans name in the DCU?
Lee: The Titans brand was muddied and ruined years ago. But this is closer to Suicide Squad and Secret Six than Titans.
Gwen: The Titans of my childhood is dead and gone. Excuse me while I go cry in the corner.
Lee: See ya! We'll call ya when we find another book to look at...

Top creators lend their talents to a new installment of THE JOKER’S ASYLUM – a special month-long, weekly series of one-shots starring the greatest villains in Batman’s rogues gallery.
Each issue is narrated by The Joker and tells a special stand-alone story that gives readers an inside look into the insane lives of The Dark Knight’s greatest adversaries! This batch of tense tales spotlights The Riddler, Harley Quinn, Mad Hatter, Clayface and Killer Croc! Can you stand the madness?!
Jim: I like checking out these one shots, but Top creators lend their talent? I’m reading through all the names and outside of my e-mail buddy from Th3rd World, Mike Raicht, I think top is pushing it. Just say new talent or whatever, I know I can’t wait to see Mike’s take on Killer Croc.
Lee: At least the art is done by top creators! The stories… we will wait and see.
Gwen:These mini story's can be a lot of fun so I think they are something to look forward to.
Lee: HEY! I thought you were off crying in the corner. That didn't take long. Fickle, that's all I'm sayin'.
Gwen: I hope you're nicer to your kids when they get upset about something ><

RED HOOD: LOST DAYS #1
On sale JUNE 2
1 of 6
32 pg, FC, $2.99 US
Written by JUDD WINICK
Art by PABLO RAIMONDI
Cover by FRANCESCO MATTINA
1:25 variant cover by BILLY TUCCI
Judd Winick (BATMAN: UNDER THE HOOD) returns to write the adventures of Jason Todd in this special 6-part epic exploring the lost days of this misunderstood character. Learn what secret events led Jason on his eventual path of death and destruction. Guest-starring Ra’s al Ghul and Talia with amazing artwork by Pablo Raimondi (BATTLE FOR THE COWL: THE UNDERGROUND, X-Factor).
Jim: I think Judd did a good job with Jason as the Red Hood, so giving him a chance to expand that story is fine by me. I wonder if Jason is actually gay?
Lee: If he isn’t now, he will be by the end of six issues. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Gwen:This could be interesting. I am somewhat curious about How Jason became the person he is in today's comics.
