Everyone should remember that today isn't all about cookouts and BBQ's.  It's a time to reflect upon all those that have given everything to protect what we have.

A Victorious Smile

Hi, everyone.  I'm on Spring Break this weekend, spending time back home in Virginia to celebrate Easter with my family.  So, I have a special Easter-themed message today.  It's the kind that doesn't involve bunny rabbits or chocolate, so if that sounds offensive to you, then please read no further.  I plan to talk about comics next week.

Facing Shadows

Okay, I was going to save this for another day, but I don't see Lee's cover post this morning and this IS a cover post too AND close enough to Groundhog's Day to use it.  If you're Bill Murry you might still be reliving it.  So enjoy!

You may not realize it, because Hallmark hasn't created cards for it yet, but today is a very special holiday.  It's Groundhog's Day!!!  The most celebrated day in February, next to that one with hearts and flowers.  When I was single, Valentines Day was always a drag, but I did send out once a 12th Day of Groundhog letter to someone special (two plus twelve equals fourteen, you know).  It must have made a lasting impression, because she later married me.  Anyway, as is our custom around here to rest on holidays (and put together really quick posts), you get to be treated to an extra dose of Comic Covers (borrowing from Lee's shtick)!  The theme for today is of course SHADOWS!!!  Unlike Lee, I'm not going to provide a bunch of cool research like who drew them.  I may not even provide commentary, because I'm writing this on Sunday (Jan 27) and I'm hoping to take my nap soon.

Comic Covers Sunday: Memorial Day

Nope, no covers today.  Oddly enough there aren't any comics related to memorial day.

So today, just a couple of photos of what the day is about.  While we enjoy hotdogs, and hamburgers, and all the wonderful things we have in life.  We should pause and remember those that have given everything so that we may have a picnic.

Twas the Day before Christmas (Dennis the Menace style)

If you thought I was going to take this opportunity to come up with some parody of the classic “Twas the night before Christmas” poem, I’m sorry to disappoint you. No, I’m afraid I’m a little too weary to embark on such an endeavor this year (I gave up after a half-hour). However, I do have a fun story to share courtesy of streaming Netflik: The 11th episode of the Dennis the Menace TV show, which aired originally on 1959 December 20, entitled “The Christmas Story”.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold # 12 – A Review

One of the things that have kept me coming back month after month on this title is the consistency of the creative team. Each issue has been written by Sholly Fisch and illustrated by Rick Burchett and Dan Davis. The art is in the animated style of the cartoon it’s based on, but I find that Rick and Dan come up with some wonderful ways to help tell each story, which I’ve commented on in the past. However, this issue and last issue had a guest artist and I was seriously thinking about jettisoning the title because of it (fickle consumer that I am – I finally dropped Marvel Adventures Super Heroes once I learned Paul Tobin was off the book). But one of the benefits of the animated style is that a new or fill-in artist can easily step-in without too much of a change. So, while I’m interested in how Rick and Dan may have handled Sholly’s script (their cover is awesome), I have no reservations about praising Ethen’s effort, because this book was GREAT!

Somethin' for Christmas

A long time ago, while at my Grandmother's house in Kansas, I remember playing the "Nuttin' for Christmas" song on an old 45. It was also at that house (in 1978) where I received one of my favorite Christmas presents, the Kenner Star Wars Death Star! Well, there's a line from that song, which I wanted to share with you:

I'm getting nuttin' for Christmas

'Cause I ain't been nuttin' but bad [1]

If you click the link (totally voluntary by the way), you'll understand why I brought it up. See, it ties into what I think makes Christmas really, really special. A few years ago we had a Holiday pod decorating contest at work and for it I created a simple star with the first verse of the song listed below on one side and the Peanuts quote on the other side. The song is actually an Easter song, but for me it summarizes Christmas perfectly (again, the links give even more explanation). No matter how "bad" you are, there's "somethin' for Christmas" for everyone.

God sent His Son -- they called Him Jesus;

He came to love, heal and forgive.
He lived and died to buy my pardon;

An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

Because He lives I can face tomorrow;
