Comics Covers Sunday Returns: Spider-man/Superman & Superman/Spider-man

Today, for you, it's Sunday (but for me it's Friday morning).  And it will take great restraint to schedule this to post later, instead of just posting as soon as I finish it.  However, tradition demands it, because we're bringing back an old Comics And... staple -- "Comic Covers Sunday"!  This feature was originally created by Lee, whom I actually ran into in person a few months ago at our LCS, Cosmic Comix.

In honor of our feature founder, here are a couple of links to some of those bygone posts, one of which features my first comic (and a few of my guest posts in the same vein):

Warning: clicking these links could take you down a rabbit hole worse than being on Facebook!

Now, I'm not promising this will be a regular feature again, but if you want consistent cover coverage, I'd direct you to the excellent 13th Dimension site, which I visit nearly every day and where they often feature cover-themed posts like these.  I credit them for the re-inspiration of this reinstatement.  They've also covered (no pun intended) some of the covers I'm sharing today, but I'm going to add my own analysis and opines...

Unless you've been hiding under a rock or no longer frequent your LCS, you're probably aware of the Marvel/DC and DC/Marvel cross-over of Spider-man/Superman and Superman/Spider-man coming out in late March (DC) and mid-April (Marvel).  And there are a ton of covers, some exclusive, ranging from $7.99 to $8.99 a piece.  So I've got to be judicious on which one to get.  Let's delve into ones I'm considering and a few that I'm not.

MARVEL/DC: SPIDER-MAN/SUPERMAN #1 MARCOS MARTIN VARIANT

I picked this one to spotlight since the Nicolas Cage series trailer just dropped for his Spider-Noir Amazon series premiering in May. Most of these covers can just be an excuse to put a Marvel and DC character together (sometimes not even Spidey and Supes or the regular versions of them).  This one works because it makes sense from a timeline perspective - 1930s.  I'm a fan of Marcos Martin; I really like the subdued colors and the blowing cape.

DC MARVEL SUPERMAN SPIDER-MAN #1 (ONE SHOT) CVR A JORGE JIMENEZ

This one seems a bit crazy at first, until I saw that Spider-man's web was attached to Superman's foot.  So it's fun, but I'm a little distracted by having Superman extending beyond the borders.

I get the silver theme, but the Superman costume just looks strange to me.  Let's just say this is not one I'm considering.

I'm waffling about this one.  On one hand (again no pun intended), it's a great bombastic cover featuring Larsen's Spidey-Cyborg creation, but I keep thinking that they should be fighting each other, since Cyborg-Superman is a villian!   But then I remembered that he originally was pretending to be a hero, so this mash-up would occur before that sinister reveal. A 1990's trade dress would've been an enhancement too.

DC MARVEL SUPERMAN SPIDER-MAN #1 (ONE SHOT) CVR G GABRIELE DELL OTTO SUPERMAN BLACK & SPIDER-MAN BLACK CARD STOCK VAR

Good pairing, and I like the upshot view and the dreary, grim and gritty vibe.  I never thought to think that Supes "resurrection" suit might have been inspired by Spidey's black costume, but it probably was.

DC MARVEL SUPERMAN SPIDER-MAN #1 (ONE SHOT) CVR J MIKEL JANIN SUPERMAN & SPIDER-MAN VS LEX LUTHOR & GREEN GOBLIN CARD STOCK VAR

An actual contender for me, with each fighting the other's arch-nemesis. I like the figure poses and diagonal smoke/explosion "line".  Plus Spidey is taking out Luthor the way he tackles Doc Ock, and Superman is just having fun with the Goblin. Now if those pumpkin bombs were laced with Kryptonite...

DC MARVEL SUPERMAN SPIDER-MAN #1 (ONE SHOT) CVR T EVAN DOC SHANER SUPERMOBILE & SPIDER-MOBILE CARD STOCK VAR

Battle of the mobiles!  I love it, and it's another contender for my hard-earned coin. I love the view angle.  It's one of the more inventive designs for sure.

Now I think of Gwen Stacy as being dead, not as Spider-Gwen, but pairing her with Lana Lang makes me think it's the original (or maybe her clone).  So, having the first loves of Spidey and Superman hanging out chatting is pretty cool.  Love the composition and far perspective spotlight on the heroes fighting someone behind the building.   Anyway, it lends itself to telling a story more than just posturing on the front.  Plus, I really dig Ramos' style.  Another strong contender.

DC MARVEL SUPERMAN SPIDER-MAN #1 (ONE SHOT) CVR B JIM LEE CARD STOCK VAR

Speaking of posturing...looks like someone's commission.

Something about the lighting on the faces is distracting, but I appreciate the logical composition!

DC MARVEL SUPERMAN SPIDER-MAN #1 (ONE SHOT) CVR S RAFA SANDOVAL CARD STOCK VAR

Sure, it's a redo/homage, but it's a redo of the classic original pairing, and it still works and looks awesome!  Plus, having the artist of Absolute Superman draw the regular Superman is going to be a big draw.  Spider-man is seems a little too thick though...

There are plenty of cheesecake covers if you want to search those out (I'll leave that to you), because face it, that's a big part of the variant cover collecting schtick.  I've seen some really busy ones and some head-scratching pairings, and some have yet to be revealed (like Arthur Adams').

That's enough for today, Women's Snowboard Cross is one live right now!

"That's all folks, now go enjoy your Sunday!"
