DC Preview Review for September Part 1 of 2

Jim: I scanned the list and DC has very little new stuff coming out for a second month in a row. In some ways I think this is a good thing as they need to focus on the individual titles anyway and make each one as strong as possible.
Lee: I think this is another slow down before the big Christmas push. And that’s good because I need time to recover from last month’s indies binge.
Gwen: September isn’t really a big retail month for anyone – school’s just started for a lot of families and Lee’s right about winter shopping being right around the corner.
Greg: Well without any new stuff, maybe we’ll all be positive and happy and just enjoy what DC is giving us. But I’m guessing we probably won’t.

The resurrected have discovered their purpose for being back, but where will the knowledge lead them? Who is the new Aqualad? And what strange event is taking place around the White Power Battery in New Mexico?

Issue #9 on sale SEPTEMBER 1
Issue #10 on sale SEPTEMBER 15
32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

Jim: So DC kills off Asian Atom, regulates mixed breed Connor Hawke to nowhere land, kicks Wally and his Asian wife to the curb and now adds Black Aqualad. Does DC have a clue what this looks like to their general reading public? As long as the character is good it will be okay but this just seems like odd timing.
Lee: I still think the general public is over reacting to the whole thing. People like to complain and this was just the latest focal point.
Gwen: I’m just waiting for something more exciting to happen in Brightest Day.
Greg: I like how Didio defended DC’s record on minority characters by bringing up McDuffie’s JLA. You know, the JLA they removed every minority from as soon as he left the book. Oh, right. Brightest Day. I dunno. Maybe that resurrected bird will come back this issue? This has been pretty boring.

GREEN LANTERN #58

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #52
Written by TONY BEDARD
Art and cover by ARDIAN SYAF & VICENTE CIFUENTES
GREEN LANTERN: EMERALD WARRIORS #2

Cover by RODOLFO MIGLIARI
GREEN ARROW #4
Written by J.T. KRUL
Art by DIOGENES NEVES & VICENTE CIFUENTES
Cover by MAURO CASCIOLI

Jim: I just wanted to point out that DC officially has more Green heroes then anyone else.
Lee: That’s only because Marvel has been slaughtering Green-ies in their universe. DC is more like a safe haven where green people run to escape persecution.
Gwen: My favorite green character is still Brainiac 5.
Greg: I think we should give DC credit for their outreach to Martin-Americans and Coluan Americans. Just think, soon we might even get some characters that are part of an ethnic group that actually exists.
Lee: Is it just me or is the bloody tongue hanging from the mouth a wee bit much on the GL Corps cover?
Gwen: The cover artist is a Gene Simmons fan Lee, try to be more understanding!
Greg: It’s a new day at DC, everyone. Some are even calling it the brightest!
Jim: Greg is sounding like me about Marvel.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #49
Written by JAMES ROBINSON
Art by POW RODRIX
Cover by MARK BAGLEY & ROB HUNTER
1:10 Variant cover by FRANCIS MANAPUL
The BRIGHTEST DAY shines a spotlight on Jade as she adjusts to the repercussions of the JLA/JSA crossover. She and Donna Troy head to the San Francisco Bay area to make themselves a new home but are confronted with old and new threats – including the New Teen Titans!
On sale SEPTEMBER 22 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US

Jim: Does this mean Jade and Donna will sleep together? The JLA has degenerated into a book that is so easy to pass on it is sad. This used to be a cornerstone book of the DCU and now it has art by Pow Rodrix, who may be the next big artist, but I have never heard or remember seeing Pow’s work.
Lee: So just because two girls move to San Francisco it automatically means they are gonna sleep together? Isn’t that just perpetuating a sterotype? Because, if it WERE true, I would have moved there long ago.
Gwen: I don’t know if they’ll actually be sleeping together but I’d be willing to bet Kyle Rayner’s had dreams about it.
Greg: Guys, what happened to James Robinson? Remember when he wrote the best superhero book of the 90’s? What happened to that guy?

TITANS #27
Written by ERIC WALLACE
Art and cover by FABRIZIO FIORENTINO
Deathstroke and Arsenal find they have something in common when they team up to halt a child slavery ring. They need to get past a foursome of super-powered foes protecting the ring first. But Osiris – the team’s reluctant powerhouse – is already out of the fight entirely! Good luck, guys…
On sale SEPTEMBER 15 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US

Jim: I picked this for two reasons. What a great cover, isn’t young love grand. And they are fighting a foursome, just like our little group.
Lee: Ummm, since when is love defined as kissing and stabbing?
Gwen: While it’s probably not the definition, since when doesn’t love involve kissing and stabbing??
Greg: This book is horrible. If you are buying it and you are not related to the creative team, you have no excuse for owning it.

Written by WILLIAM TUCCI
Art by JUSTINIANO and TOM DERENICK & ANDREW MANGUM
Cover by BRIAN BOLLAND
ONE-SHOT • On sale SEPTEMBER 29 • 32 pg FC, $3.99 US

Jim: Okay I might pick up one or two of these, but five pointless one shots for $4 each. I will peruse these on the stands and probably pass on all of them. This feels like filler to just keep up a certain amount of books. A Marvel move.
Lee: I won’t get any of the issues on the stand but I will pick up the eventual hc. There’s just too much good art in here not to get it. These become nice anthologies.
Gwen: As long as you get the one with battling dinosaurs Jim. No one can pass up battling dinosaurs!
Greg: Filler? This is the best thing DC proper has solicited in months! This is too good to be true, isn’t it? Sgt. Rock is going to turn out to be a violet lantern or something in these books, isn’t he?

NEW TEEN TITANS: GAMES HC
Written by MARV WOLFMAN & GEORGE PÉREZ
Art by GEORGE PÉREZ, MIKE PERKINS and AL VEY
Wraparound cover by GEORGE PÉREZ
Twenty years in the making, TEEN TITANS: GAMES is a can’t-miss for fans new and old. Harking back to the era when NEW TEEN TITANS was the best-selling monthly comic series comes this lost tale from legendary creators Marv Wolfman (CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS) and George Perez (FINAL CRISIS: LEGION OF THREE WORLDS) starring their fan-favorite characters just in time for the NEW TEEN TITANS’ 30th anniversary!
Set in the 1980s during the height of the New Teen Titans popularity, this stand–alone hardcover features a mysterious villain playing a deadly game with New York City as the game board–and the Teen Titans as the pieces! Like something out of a time capsule, this never-before-seen epic is the New Teen Titans story from their original creators that has never been told...until now!
On sale NOVEMBER 3 • 144 pg, FC, $24.99 US

Jim: Nope a huge pass for me. I love George Perez’s artwork, but this is a story about the Teen Titans from 20 years ago. I have moved on and DC should have also. What a waste of George’s talent finishing up a pet project that is way past its time.
Lee: Odd, I felt the exact same way. Assuming that you and I were the target market, both of us passing isn’t a good sign.
Gwen: I’d be willing to read it if another Titans fan said it was good, but it wouldn’t be something I’d pick up on my own.
Greg: Not simply content to try and recreate Dan Didio’s favorite title from the 80’s, now they are actually creating new issues of it! This isn’t for me, but it has been sitting unfinished for years, and I think it is cool that fans of that book are finally getting this.
Jim: The problem is Lee, Gwen and I are those fans and we don't care about it.
